What happened in 1834?

I found an insteresting thing. Whatever which one in these three graphs shows above about tea are increasing from 1740 and suddenly decreasing around 1834. And what I learned is China had a war with England. which is called First Opium War. Well, what happened in 1834? I did some research and found this:

Tea and DaHuang(a kind of medicine) is so important that if the foreigner can’t get this, they will lose their lives.(茶叶大黄,外夷若不得此,即无以为命。—–《谕各国夷人呈缴烟土稿》 林则徐1840年3月)

Some Chinese at that time thought all foreigners just eat meat without vegetable. So if foreigners can’t get tea. They will die because they can’t have a bowel movement………..

This makes me want to laugh. Although feels sad.

At 1834 Qing dynasty limited the export tea to England. England started a country tea plan which want to make tea by theirselves.

Things just become more and more weird. I just feel the Lin ZeXun’s diplomacy is sort of naive. The reason he told to the foreigner is that we don’t bring any bad stuff to your country, why you give us the opium? Chinese just don’t understand the world at that time. They thought give the world goodwills, the world will give back the samething.

Too pride, my people.

Thanks for you coming!!!! I know that is pretty good tea by my background knowledge. So thanks for your generosity. Your coming make our class more interesting. We are very glad this kind of class. Well, I think we can talk more about tea’s making and learn more about it. I preet sure the oolong is the best one for me. Which you called Qing tea or Tie Guanyin. Thank you very much

Free-write about The Giver

Well, the author use a lot of words to implicit the content of the book. In the foreword, like the sentence Please list all the similes and metaphors in The GIver which is a sort of joke. The author use two part like her grandchildren and qwinoa, kale to point out that this is a pretty old book or this is written by long times ago.( I don’t think she is implicit she is old, but I felt it). Then… I feel the author is kind of childlike innocence and objectively when she is writing this article. She writted some letter which came from the reader. She is so objectively so I feel she is a rational person.

Why writed like this?

I guess that is provide some words to respond sympathetically when reader read the later part( the book)

And she maybe wants to give readers a feeling of this book is so intersting!! quickly come and read it!! You don’t believe it? see, here are a lot of letter of readers. They have a lot of different feelings whe they read.

I think the story of tea can be separated to two part one is the part before Tanaka Senshō establish the “association”, another part is after that. I think an interesting thing of tea in Japan is tea is so expensive at first( first tea came to Japan from China) then it became cheap and normal. In China, it is cheap at first then it became expensive.

I noticed that tea is art of life in Japan includes a lot of rules and just nobility use that. After Tanaka’s school the thing changes it still important, but more focus on the inner things which means whatever you are poor or rich, you can drink it. And government use tea ceremonies as a propaganda tool. The Tourist Board of the Japanese Government Railways wrote a book about the tea because they thought that is an important part of the Japanese culture. The Cha-no-yubecome a daily thing nowadays. It still important but not that fur from life.

I have to read the article again….. This is a book about tea. Why I choose the sentence? It just some word I miss understand. It is nothing with hard.

Tea test

I tried all the tea in out class.

I want to talk about the LongJing and Tregothnan a little bit.

I familiar with Longjing. It comes from my hometown, so the full name of the tea is Xihu Longjing. Xihu is a lake in south China city Hangzhou. so the name for this tea is kind of Place+tea name way. Longjing is green tea. It is light than black tea. A good Longjing leave should look like a whole leave which just flatten. And the Longjing can be drink with some sugar. It will be better.

Tregothnan is amazed me. It is a kind of tea I never try. It is so strong that I even don’t think it is not a kink of tea. I think it is a traditional tea in my mind. It is a good thinging. because just when a thing is keep developing. The thing will never disappear.

I saw the plant names False Indigo. It is a flowering plant. The plant is the height of 1 to 1.5 meters.  Brown limbs start from roots. And when I check from Wikipedia, I see that the plant will the purple.

Bai Yuji is a famous poet in China. It is the reason I choose him.

After eating

After I read the poem “After eating”, a familiar feeling emerged from my heart. Bai Yuji always writes some poems that include a lot of philosophy. In the poem, the poet writes three different people: Happy person, sorrowful person, and the lighthearted person. The poem evokes the thinking of the time. The way you treat life will affect the way you treat time. I think a poet is a person who without worries nor delight. You can feel balance from the poem. The way the poet treats the poem just like he treats a fact in life. Just like the sun rises from the east, you will not feel happy or sad because of the sunrise. It is not emotional. There are people who like to take the easy approach in life, right or wrong. There is a sentence that evokes me: “Having done eating I go to sleep”. When I did all my homework, I just felt easy. What I always do is I eat then I have a nap. Tea always symbolizes tranquility. We can see the poet take two bowls of tea for himself. “Two” always means not too much and not too less. It is a balance of more and less.

Sent to Liu from Tongzhou as I leisurely rest

It is a typical Bian Zhe poem in Chinese analysis. It means the background of the poet is being demoted. By the title, we can find this poem is written from Tongzhou to Liu. Liu is a small city in that time. The writer feels sad. The cold water shows his sadness. Sadness and the cold are associated with each other. It is a lonely situation for the writer because he has been evicted from the center of the police power. He is missing his family and his friends. In ancient times, literati always drink tea when they have a meeting together. The writer has no friends near him to meet with, so he is not drinking tea.

Tea and alcohol are complementary in same place.

  • Tea is the chief of the hundred herbs and the heart of the ten thousand plants.
  • Before I arrive in the market to make any arrangement, people are already waiting to buy me.
  • People will not be mad because of tea
  • the various courtiers drink alcohol they address superiors without fear
  • that people from the ten thousand countries in the world run after the Fuliang and Xizhou teas.
  • when the Lord of Zhao in Zhongshan played the qin [zither] and when the King of Qin beat upon the earthenware jar, no one could invite the artists either to sing or dance merely with a cup of tea.
  • Offering alcohol to your neighbors is just to show your courtesy and politeness while serving it in an army headquarters is but to compromise differences.
  • I am offered to the future Buddha Maitreya and dedicated to the Bodhisattva Guanyin

I think tea and alcohol are complementary in many places.

In economic area. Merchants trade tea from China to other countries. It is because Tea is rare in the ancient world. Merchants trade tea between China and other countries to get benefits. As the described in the article, “Before I arrive in the market to make any arrangement, people are already waiting to buy me.” These all show the commercial value of the tea in ancient times. However, based on the article, I also can figure out alcohol is expensive in ancient times. “While merely half a glass of alcohol, being honored, costs seven cash.” I get a complementation of tea and alcohol is that tea is used in international trade in ancient times, alcohol is used in national trade.

In the mind area. Tea is sobering which has the same function as coffee. As I find in the article, tea was offered to the future Buddha Maitreya. Hermit and Buddha drink tea when they think about philosophical problems and Buddhism questions. “People will not be mad because of tea.” In the other part, alcohol can bring brave “the various courtiers drink alcohol they address superiors without fear”. Alcohol even can compromise the differences between persons. Alcohol and tea bring people the different feelings in different circumstances.

In social occasions. When people are dancing or singing, drinking tea will be strange. Drinking alcohol when people are talking about book or knowledge is also inapt. People will consider drinking alcohol at a party or meeting a new friend. “Offering alcohol to your neighbors is just to show your courtesy and politeness” is an example. Or drinking tea at an important occasion. For tea, people always drink it at a quieter place like when people talking about books. The reason for using in different occasions is the different feeling brought from the alcohol and tea. Alcohol always makes people feel stimulated. Tea makes people feel calm.
